The Melbourne Un-Pub Crawl

The Melbourne Un-Pub Crawl

Whatever you do, do NOT call this a pub crawl. In a city famed for its intimate laneway bars, a pub crawl is about the least Melburnian thing you could do. So we've re-worked the concept.

We hate pub crawls, but we love pubs.

A "Melbourne Pub Crawl" conjures up ideas of bad, inauthentic nightclubs filled with drunk students whose sole purpose is to get drunk.

So we decided to-reclaim the pub crawl with our Un-Pub Crawl.

This tour features 4 amazing local hideouts, far from the tourist trail. It features quality conversation with your local guide, who will no only take you to 4 amazing bars, but will tell you how that bar shaped the city you see today.

Since we only go to bars we would normally frequent, we change the bar-tinerary to our tastes and time of year. Rest assured, you will be visiting:

  • A classic Aussie pub. Throw back a pot or a pint, as here’s where you’ll learn about the standard pour sizes of Victorian beers and how beer nearly led to all alcohol being banned during the gold rush.
  • A cocktail bar. Melbourne has some of the best mixologists around, but most of them are hidden in tiny, hidden cocktail bars that survive on word of mouth alone. Visit a speakeasy-style bar and learn about how and why Melbourne’s laneway scene developed.
  • A wine bar. With the Yarra Valley just a stone’s throw away, it would be a sin not to taste some of the delectable wines in the region. Learn how wine shaped Australia’s history and how to taste wine like a member of the social elite.
  • A surprise! Melbourne’s bar scene is ever-changing, so the fourth bar will be chosen by your guide on the day, depending on the group’s desires, the weather, and what is trendy in Melbourne at that particular moment in time.

If you’re still thirsty by the end of the tour, don’t forget to ask your local guide for some more recommendations, so you won’t have to worry about a dry mouth for the rest of your stay in Melbourne.

Welcome to Melbourne (with Eureka Skydeck)

Welcome to Melbourne (with Eureka Skydeck)

Just arrived to Melbourne? This is the tour for you. See Melbourne from high atop Eureka Tower, where your guide will point out their favourite parts of the city. Sample coffee, food and beer and finish the tour feeling like a local.

Start your tour at the Eureka Skydeck, an 88-storey skyscraper that is home to stunning views of the city. Your guide will bring you to the top of the tower, pointing out key points of interest in the city and previewing where you will go next. After coming back down to earth, it’s time to dive into the cityscape.

First, a coffee. Your guide will explain what makes Melbourne coffee unique, what to look for in a barista, and some of the vocabulary to use when ordering a coffee. You’ll put your knowledge to the test by ordering a brew, then enjoying it with your group.

Next, it’s time to explore Melbourne’s famous street art scene. What used to simply be called “graffiti” has become a trendy artistic style, and the laneways of this city are filled with constantly evolving murals. Your guide will bring you to some of their favourites and explain how the movement has developed, exploring the work of these back alley artists until you’ve worked up an appetite.

And what better way to meet that appetite than with Melbourne’s multicultural food scene. Your guide will take you to their favourite local restaurant for a hearty sample of one of the many cuisines Melbourne is known for. Here your guide will tell you about the numerous waves of migrants who have helped to create the Melbourne we see today.

After you’ve finished eating, it’s time for a drink. Melbourne is filled with many fun and fabulous bars, but you need a local to tell you which ones are hot at this very moment. Your guide will take you to a trendy bar to finish things off with a beer (or soda) and a final chat.

By the end of your tour, you’ll be able to spot amazing art, cafes, restaurants, and bars like a local. But if you still need more tips, your local guide will be happy to offer up some suggestions for the rest of your stay.

American Food Tour (with Queen Victoria Markets) × × × × × Jetzt buchen Available Jetzt buchen Available
American Food Tour (with Queen Victoria Markets)

American Food Tour (with Queen Victoria Markets)

Discover Melbourne's newest food trend – Americana. Barbeque, brisquet, bagels, burgers and more. This tour will fill your stomach while teaching you about the special relationship we've had with our neighbours across the Pacific.

It's no secret that Australians share common values with our neighbours across the Pacific. And now, Melburnians are embracing that culture with an American food renaissance. Join our Yankee guides and experience the rich cultural heritage taking hold in our city. Learn about American and Aussie barbecues’ shared heritage, and discover a secret bar playing host to an American tradition from 1869: pinball. And whatever you do, bring your appetite. Yee-haw!

The first stop on our Melbourne tour will be one of Australia’s oldest hamburger stands, serving up that most classic of American meals. You’ll sample some of their hamburger varieties before heading on to learn about how our food gets to the plate in many of Melbourne’s restaurants.

We’ll get a farm-to-table lesson with a walk through the Queen Victoria Markets. You’ll learn how the markets aren’t just for tourists; this is where many local restaurants stock their kitchens.

Continue on to an authentic local bagel shop, and learn how Australia and America’s bagel tradition derives from a shared heritage from Poland.

From there we’ll move on to a secret bar in the American speakeasy tradition. Did you know that during Prohibition in the USA, illegal bars required clients to keep their voices down, or “speak easy”? Those bars are now all the rage in Melbourne, so of course we need to stop at one.

Finally, we’ll end our Melbourne food tour at an authentic American barbecue restaurant. Here, you’ll learn about the unique cooking techniques that go into making barbecued meat fall right off the bone — so maybe you can recreate some of the Aussie-American flavour on your own grill at home.

Your tour will end here, but don’t forget to ask your local guide for recommendations of other places to eat while you’re in town.

Additional information

Inclusions: Local English-speaking guide, 4 food samplings at 4 local restaurants, public transportation during the tour.

St. Kilda Beach, Bakery & Beer Tour

Explore Melbourne's historic beachfront town of St. Kilda with a professional local guide. Discover the neighborhood that gave the world AC/DC, royal visitors and even live penguins.

Just south of central Melbourne is the beautiful beachside community of St. Kilda. Its sandy shores aren’t just beautiful, they’re historic. Join your guide and discover the world’s oldest continuously operating roller coaster, explore Victorian sea baths, beautiful Art Deco architecture and try and spot the wild penguins.

This is the area made famous by the Australian TV show "Underbelly," which tells the stories of some of St. Kilda's most notorious gangsters.  (But don't worry — the criminals have moved out, replaced by hipsters with exceedingly well-maintained beards.)

Melbourne Like a Local

Melbourne Like a Local

Experience a full day of Melbourne going to the places off the tourist maps, and most popular with locals.

Make the most of Melbourne! This Melbourne Like a Local tour combines two of our most popular adventures (Welcome to Melbourne and The Un-Pub Crawl) into one epic afternoon.

You’ll start your all-in-one tour at the Eureka Skydeck, an 88-storey skyscraper that is home to stunning views of the city.

From there, we’ll head for some fuel in the form of caffeine. We’ll grab a flat white (the most classic of Aussie coffees) and your guide will explain what makes Melbourne coffee unique, what to look for in a barista, and some of the vocabulary to use when ordering a coffee.

Next, it’s time to explore Melbourne’s famous street art scene. What used to simply be called “graffiti” has become a trendy artistic style, and the laneways of this city are filled with constantly evolving murals. Your guide will bring you to some of their favourites and explain how the movement has developed, exploring the work of these back alley artists.

Then we’ll fuel up again, but this time with Melbourne’s multicultural foods. Your guide will take you to their favourite local restaurant for a hearty sample of one of the many cuisines Melbourne is known for. You’ll learn about the numerous waves of migrants who have helped to create the Melbourne we see today.

After you’ve finished eating, it’s time for a drink (or two or three or more!). Melbourne is filled with many fun and fabulous bars, but you need a local to tell you which ones are hot at this very moment. To help you out, we’ll spend the rest of the afternoon checking out four different iconic Melbourne institutions. The order of the venues may change, but we’ll make sure we hit up every style of drinking establishment, from a classic Aussie pub to the cosmopolitan cocktail bar.

You’ll learn a bit of boozy history, like how beer nearly led to all alcohol being banned during the gold rush, and how Melbourne’s laneway scene developed (as we sip cocktails in a speakeasy-style bar, of course). You’ll also learn how wine shaped Australia’s history as we sample some of the Yarra Valley’s offerings.

If you’re still thirsty by the end of the tour, don’t forget to ask your local guide for some more recommendations, so you won’t have to worry about a dry mouth for the rest of your stay in Melbourne.

4th of July American Food & Drink Party × × × × × × ×
4th of July American Food & Drink Party

4th of July American Food & Drink Party

The continental USA might be 13 time zones away, but if there’s one thing Melburnians are good at, it’s finding any excuse to party the night away.

  • Come celebrate the biggest party weekend in the USA… in Melbourne! We’re honouring the 4th of July with a pop-up tour that celebrates American culture Aussie-style.

We’ll start our tour by honouring that most classic American staple at one of Australia’s oldest hamburger stands. You’ll sample some of their hamburger varieties before heading on to learn about how our food gets to the plate.

Then, we move on to a secret bar in the American speakeasy tradition. During Prohibition in the USA, illegal bars required clients to keep their voices down, or “speak easy.” Those bars are now all the rage in Melbourne and we know where to find the good ones.

You’ll also get to try some samples from an authentic local bagel shop, and learn how Australia and America’s bagel tradition derives from a shared heritage — Poland.

Finally, we’ll end the night by hopping on a train to Hawthorn to visit a pub serving a tongue-in-cheek  Donald Trump-themed cocktail, named “The Apprentice.” Note that we’ll be taking public transit, so please purchase and load a Myki card in advance of the tour (you can do so at convenience stores).

To make this party even better, we’re also giving out prizes for whoever wears the corniest American-inspired costume.

  • Additional information

Inclusions: Local English-speaking guide, food samplings at 2 local restaurants, 2 alcoholic American-themed drinks.

Exclusions: Transportation during tour (you’ll need a Myki card – please purchase and load one with credit in advance of the tour), additional drinks or food, tips/gratuities for your guide.

Dress standard: Melbourne is known to have four seasons in one day – please check the weather report and dress accordingly!

Your Trip: For your Urban Adventure you will be in a small group of a maximum of 12 people.
